Sonetto 1, op. 72, for Tenor, 2 Violins, Viola and Violoncello

Francesco Petrarca (Arezzo, July 20, 1304 - Arquà, July 19, 1374) was an Italian poet and humanist. His most famous work is the Canzoniere. In 1327 he supposedly met a married woman in the church of Avignon, whom he called Laura and with whom he fell in love. Whether this woman existed at all, or whether she is just a figure invented by Petrarch, is disputed in research. Although his love was not reciprocated, the impression of Laura had such a strong effect on the poet that he adored her throughout his life and found in her a lasting source of inspiration. In the Canzoniere, a collection of sonnets and canzonas, he sings of his unfulfilled love beyond her death (1348). One could almost understand the sonnets as a kind of soul analysis of the poet. It is actually not at all about the apparent main character Laura, but in reality about Petrarch's inner feelings. Roger Faedi
